People with sleep disorders have often used hypnosis to cure their sleep difficulties. These procedures may either be self administered or done with the assistance of a specialist or doctor who is trained in psychotherapy or hypnotherapy.
Recent studies show that hypnosis can be an effective remedy for chronic or acute conditions of insomnia. Hypnosis induction is not therapeutic in itself. It is just the first step in conditioning the mind of the subject to focus or concentrate on a predetermined goal so that suggestions or instructions can be given.
While hypnosis is often used to motivate an individual to correct a bad habit or a psychological disorder by simple suggestion, it is quite difficult for people who practice self-hypnosis to administer the same suggestions or instruction without the assistance of a trained practitioner or without the use of devices to instill the hypnosis induction script into the subconscious.
Hypnosis induction as a prelude to the actual hypnotic trance is often used to put the subject into a state of relaxation or a mental state of increased susceptibility to suggestion. The length of the procedure and the intensity of administering suggestions will differ from one subject to another. But they share common characteristics such as heightened or decreased response to suggestions and alterations in sensation, emotion and thought processes which we sometime confuse as hallucinations.
Before initiating treatment for sleep disorders using hypnosis induction techniques, it is important to identify the root cause of the problem in order to rule out medical or psychological causes. Deciding on hypnosis as a course of treatment for insomnia should only be considered as an adjunct to medical or pharmacological procedures and should only be tried with assistance from a qualified hypnosis practitioner.
For long term strategies however, it would be wise to include other non-pharmacological procedures such as patient education, relaxation therapy, sleep hygiene, or taking up new un-conventional methods of sleep therapy such as meditation, yoga and other activities that are outside the realms of hypnosis induction to improve your sleep pattern.
